What is BIS?

BIS is the National Standard Body of India established under the BIS Act 2016 for the harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking, and quality certification of goods and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. BIS has been providing traceability and tangibility benefits to the national economy in a number of ways – providing safe reliable quality goods; minimizing health hazards to consumers; promoting exports and imports substitute; control over proliferation of varieties, etc. through standardization, certification, and testing.

Products that Require Mandatory BIS License or BIS Certificate

Certain products are required to have BIS License or Certification mandatorily considering public health and safety. No one can manufacture or sell products without BIS Certification. The following are products that require mandatory BIS License or Certification.

Why this License is Required?

BIS Certification is a means for providing third party guarantee of quality, safety and reliability of products to the customer. BIS Certification is voluntary in nature; however, the Government of India has made BIS certification mandatory for certain products taking into consideration public health.

What is BIS license?

The “BIS” in BIS certification stands for the Bureau of Indian Standards and is the national Indian certification body under the umbrella of the Indian Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food & Public Distribution. This organization was formerly known as the Indian Standards Institution (ISI).

 

As per Government notification, 90 products are mandatorily required to have BIS certification. BIS also operates Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme under which overseas manufacturers can be granted licence to use the BIS Standard Mark.

 

Nominate an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) using prescribed Nomination Form. Ensure that application is complete, refer checklist of documents. Submit duly filled-in and complete application along with requisite fees; documentation (in duplicate) and Nomination Form of AIR at FMCD, BIS Headquarters, New Delhi.
