BIS is the National Standard Body of India established under the BIS Act 2016 for the harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking, and quality certification of goods and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
BIS has been providing traceability and tangibility benefits to the national economy in a number of ways – providing safe reliable quality goods; minimizing health hazards to consumers; promoting exports and imports substitute; control over proliferation of varieties, etc. through standardization, certification, and testing.
The BIS Registration is granted by the BIS office after successful safety testing of the product as per notified Indian Standard and furnishing of necessary documents.

• Finding IS standard applicable to the product
• Identify model & series applicable
• Selection of BIS approved lab
• Submission of online application
• Submission of document as per checklist
• Submission of sample to BIS approved lab
• Coordinate with lab for a testing
• Submission of document if required by lab
• Verification of report for Models, Series, Brand Name and a Manufacturing Company
• Coordinate with lab to submit the report to BIS
• Coordinate to BIS for License Grant
• Reply to query if any raised
• Coordinate with BIS for Grand of License
• BIS Certificate issued for 2 years
• Modification & Updation of Model & Series when required
• Renewal Support when due.

The ‘BIS‘ in BIS certification stands for the Bureau of Indian Standards and is the national Indian certification body under the umbrella of the Indian Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food & Public Distribution. This organization was formerly known as the Indian Standards Institution (ISI).

ISI is meant for a quality standard set by the Indian government. However the term “gISI mark” continues to be used for the quality standards. BIS is authorized to use the ISI mark and offers the product certification, which is basically voluntary.
